Earlier this week, a photo of a white buffalo calf taken in Yellowstone National Park went viral on social media.

In addition to being adorable, the picture went viral because it could mark the fulfillment of a centuries-old Native American prophecy.

To many Native Americans - and particularly for members of the Lakota tribe - a white buffalo calf is the most sacred creature on Earth.

Chief Arvol Looking Horse, spiritual leader of the Lakato, Dakota, and Nakota Oyate tribes, said:

“The birth of this calf is both a blessing and a warning.”

In addition to being a fascinating part of Native American culture and folklore, the story of the White Buffalo Calf prophecy reveals some spiritual themes that can be found across different early religions, notably the central prophecy of a messianic figure whose foretold arrival will bring about a new era of peace and prosperity.

What is the White Buffalo Prophecy?

The White Buffalo Prophecy is intertwined with the legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman, a central figure in the spiritual traditions of the Sioux tribes.

Apparition of the Buffalo Calf Maiden by Frithjof Schuon. 1959.

According to the legend, the White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared to the Lakota people during a time of great hardship thousands of years ago.

She brought with her a sacred pipe and spiritual teachings that would guide the Lakota toward a brighter future. She transformed into a white buffalo calf before prophesizing her own return during a future period of great difficulty.

The prophecy foretells the birth of a white buffalo calf, an extraordinarily rare event in nature. This occurrence is seen as a sacred sign, heralding a time of renewal and harmony for humanity and the Earth.

Looking Horse, who is also the 19th keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Woman Pipe and Bundle, retold the parting words of the White Buffalo Calf Woman:

“And some day when the times are hard again, I shall return and stand upon the earth as a white buffalo calf, black nose, black eyes, black hooves.”

Based on the pictures of the Yellowstone calf, our fluffy friend seems to fit the description.

Looking Horse said that a naming ceremony has been held for the calf (he declined to reveal the name) and that a celebratory event marking the calf’s birth has been scheduled for the Buffalo Field Campaign headquarters in Yellowstone on June 26.

Looking Horse is a fascinating character, and I recommend this 10-minute video of him talking about the prophecy and its place in Lakota culture.
