Plus a short reflection on my experience growing the newsletter - and future plans.

Your faithful writer,
Dr. Daniel Smith

Welcome to all of our new readers. Today’s newsletter is a bit untraditional. Instead of explaining a concept or idea, I’m going to reflect on my experience writing and growing the Daily Concept — and share my plans for the future with you.

Before getting into all that, I wanted to make a small request before I share some heart-warming messages from our readers.

If you can: Please like the Daily Concept Instagram account. I’ve been making videos and posting other content over the past month, and I’ve set a goal of reaching 1,000 followers by the end of March. Help me out by liking the page!

On Wednesday I wrote about ‘gratitude journaling’, which is the idea that writing down things we are grateful for makes us happier and more appreciative of what we have.

I asked readers to share things that they’re grateful for, and here are some of the responses:

“I’m grateful for having an understanding partner, that makes me feel safe and loved.”

“I’m grateful for my two beautiful cats, who teach me every day how to truly love someone, without conditions or strains.”

“I’m grateful I know who I am.”

“It's difficult to think about something in particular but I am grateful for the little things that help me find happiness when nothing feels right and certain. These little things can be new songs I listen to, the pretty clouds in the sky or some funny moments with my friends.”

The Daily Concept Journey

The thoughtful messages sent by our readers led me to reflect on my experience writing the newsletter and growing the Daily Concept brand.

Unshaven but appreciative!

When I started the newsletter, I wanted to share my love of ideas with readers.

I’d been writing newsletters for the past few years, and during that time I’d realized that newsletters are a great medium for learning about the world.

They are delivered right into your inbox and can teach you something new in just a few minutes — whether it be on the train on the way home from work, or even on the toilet.

I’ve been writing my whole life, and I love the idea of being able to write for — and teach — a big audience of intellectually curious readers. That’s why I started the Daily Concept. The initial email list had just a few dozen subscribers, mostly friends and family members.

Now it’s grown to over a thousand people! I am so happy that people I don’t know personally have enjoyed the Daily Concept — it really validates the experience for me and encourages me to keep building. (P.S. Feel free to reply to this email to introduce yourself if we haven’t met. I always want to get to know my readers better)

Big Goals Ahead: I would love to reach 5,000 people and over 100 blogs by the end of 2024, and I will need your help to do so. If you’ve enjoyed the Daily Concept, please like it on social media and share the newsletter with your friends.

In a world of mind-numbing social media content, I want the Daily Concept to be an oasis of slow learning, self-improvement, and personal growth for myself and for readers.

Thanks for coming along for the ride so far — I can’t wait to see where we go next!

Love,
Dan
